Development of Hydrogen Pipeline Transportation Accelerates in China

Since 2023, the construction progress of China's hydrogen pipeline projects has significantly accelerated.

 

With the rapid development of the hydrogen storage and transportation industry, the advantages of pipeline transportation in long-distance hydrogen storage and transportation have also begun to gradually emerge. To solve the contradiction between the growing demand for hydrogen and the misallocation of domestic resources, hydrogen pipeline construction in China is accelerating.

 

Project Progress

 

Inner Mongolia's 258-kilometer hydrogen-blended natural gas pipeline: This is China's first large-scale hydrogen-blended natural gas pipeline project, which aims to mix hydrogen with natural gas and transport it through pipelines. The construction of this pipeline will help to improve the combustion efficiency of natural gas, reduce its environmental impact, and promote the use of renewable energy.

 

50-kilometer hydrogen pipeline in Daye City of Hubei Province: This is another important measure for China in hydrogen pipeline construction. Daye City is an important industrial city in Hubei Province, and this project will provide local hydrogen supply security and promote local industrial development.

 

"West-to-East" green hydrogen pipeline project: This project is included in the  "National Oil and Gas Network Construction Implementation Plan", marking a new stage in China's development in the field of hydrogen energy. The pipeline will start from Ulanqab City in Inner Mongolia and end at Yan'shan Petrochemical in Beijing, with a total length of over 400 kilometers. The construction of this project will provide demonstration leadership for future hydrogen pipeline network construction.

 

Technological Breakthrough

 

Successful trial production of special steel for hydrogen pipeline transportation: Multiple steel enterprises have successfully developed special steel for pipeline hydrogen transportation, providing more reliable and efficient options for hydrogen storage and transportation. These steels have excellent corrosion resistance and strength, meeting the requirements of high-pressure hydrogen pipelines.

 

Successful implementation of leakage and flammability test in confined spaces: The first full-size hydrogen-blended natural gas pipeline leakage and combustion test in a confined space was successfully implemented, filling the gaps in China's long-distance hydrogen doped natural gas pipeline combustion verification test.

 

Market Potential

 

Compared with other transportation forms such as long tube trailers, hydrogen pipeline transportation has economical advantages in large-scale and long-term continuous transportation. Therefore, more and more enterprises and research institutions are beginning to pay attention to the construction and operation of hydrogen pipelines. With the continuous improvement of technology and research depth, hydrogen pipeline transportation will play a more important role in long-distance hydrogen gas storage and transportation in the future.
