Thermal Process Expo News: U.S. Metalworking Investment Focuses on Aviation and Energy Pipelines

Thermal Process Expo has learned that downstream metals and mineral industries in North America are entering a new round of capital expansion, with energy transition and transportation technology transformation serving as the core driving forces. Data shows that in the United States alone, capital expenditure projects totaling over $2 billion are expected to commence construction by the end of this quarter. These investments are primarily concentrated on key processes that convert base metals into industrial components, including casting, forging, rolling, and finishing.

Investment in the casting sector shows a trend toward diversification. Beyond aerospace, other significant casting projects are also underway. Canadian company Canerector is expanding its Kent Casting Plant in Greenville, Michigan, to produce cast iron materials for engine components and pipeline fittings. Meanwhile, Chilean company ME Elecmetal is upgrading its steel casting facility in Duluth, Minnesota, focusing on wear-resistant steel castings for the mining and construction industries.

Thermal Process Expo has learned that in the pipeline manufacturing sector, several companies have launched plant upgrade plans to meet anticipated growth in demand. U.S. Cast Iron Pipe is preparing to expand and upgrade its Birmingham, Alabama plant, which primarily serves the oil and gas sector with resistance-welded pipelines and provides spiral welded pipes for water infrastructure.

International capital is actively participating in U.S. pipeline capacity expansion. Borusan Berg Pipeline, under Turkey’s Borusan Holding, also plans to start an expansion project at its Panama City, Florida plant by the end of March. The plant mainly produces large-diameter, longitudinally welded pipes for construction and the oil and gas industry. The current industrial upgrade aims to produce wider-diameter and thicker-walled pipeline products.

Industry analysts generally believe that over the next decade, global demand for steel pipes, especially in natural gas exploration, production, and gathering, will see significant growth. In addition, other sectors in the energy field, such as renewable energy and water transportation, are also important markets for steel pipe applications.
