Moldova turns to Ukraine to avert gas supply crisis

Moldavian Prime Minister Maia Sandu. (PA)

Moldova is speeding up talks with Ukraine on the prospect of receiving gas from the Ukrainian transmission system to avoid possible winter supply disruptions should Russia and Ukraine fail to reach a new transit agreementbefore 31 December 2019.

Moldovagaz and Gazprom are expected to sign a new supply contract when their current deal expires on 31 December, but these supplies would have to transit Ukraine and could therefore be interrupted.

Moldova has been forced to look for short-term supply alternatives
