TUBE SHOW 2024 Bulletin on Cutting Large Diameter, Thick-Walled Tubes

In material processing, about 90% of metals come from recycling channels. Precise laser cutting aids in rapid jointing. The accuracy of laser machines in creating countersinks for fasteners, beveling connection joints, and preparing beveled edges for welding outperforms traditional processes during on-site assembly and welding. TUBE SHOW 2024 has also learned that it is precisely because of these advantages that laser cutting has been widely applied.

 

Due to the high utilization rate of recycled materials by laser processing and its rapid construction speed, both the federal government and the construction industry have substantial demand for precise laser cutting of steel pipes. The former involves infrastructure construction, while the latter includes both residential and commercial building construction. Hence, during the five-year period from 2018 to 2023, the use of structural steel grew at a compound annual growth rate of 5.3%.

 

TUBE SHOW 2024 understands that currently, machines on the market employ different methods for laser cutting tubes of various sizes. Mazak's machine features six control axes and four self-centering chucks for cutting different sizes and types of pipes and profiles (such as hollow structural sections, I-beams, H-beams, and angles). Its diode laser technology is more energy-efficient than CO2 lasers and offers a 40% power density increase compared to fiber lasers.

 

TRUMPF's machine, aiming to accommodate a variety of workpiece geometries, uses self-centering chucks to prevent damage to the tubes. These chucks are connected to a sensor for real-time monitoring to avoid collisions.

 

The LT8.20 machine comes with 3D capabilities, essentially able to handle any shape. It can be used to process complex cutting patterns, hard-to-reach locations, and prepare weld cuts on thick-walled tubes.
